College NSO

That’s New Student Orientation, in case you didn’t know. Moving my youngest into his dorm today was a little surreal. I’ve known it was coming and I’m ready and excited for him to get started in college,  but I’m just not ready for all the PC of today’s world. If I verbalized what I really felt, I’m sure I’d be sentenced to some sensitivity training somewhere, so I’ve learned to keep my mouth shut. Suffice it to say that there are certain things in life that I believe just aren’t right and should not be considered normal. Tolerated, sure, and I’m definitely not advocating a witch hunt or supporting harassment or abuse. You want to be weird? Cool. There are things about me that could also be considered weird. I’m OK with that. But I’m not about to force you to consider them normal and start a weird-tolerant support group. I’m just weird. You let me be weird and I’ll let you be weird and we can go on with our weird lives without bothering each other, OK?

It is exciting, though, to listen to the college president and ASB leaders talk about the exciting potential of this freshman class and know that they are talking about my boy. I can’t wait to see what significant lives are ahead of both of my kids. They are eminently more intelligent and capable than I am. I have no doubt at all that they will both attain great heights that I can admire and applaud from my meager (and weird) little perch in life. Guys, if you ever find this post, know that I love you more than you’ll ever know and I couldn’t be prouder of you. You are both awesome.
